Community Matters 2010-2011
A Studio 3 Arts project
This 3-year cohesion programme uncovered three wards in Barking and Dagenham through arts-led community engagement that forged links with local people, councillors and businesses. Susie created an applied arts volunteer training programme, as part of the project that is included in a best practice guide:
‘CULTURE AND VOLUNTEERING. An introduction to volunteering across the arts and cultural sector in London’. Mayor of London.
The arts-led engagement programme was led by volunteers and used humour and art to uncover the local character of each area. Operation Becontree trained the volunteers as secret agents and sent them on a secret mission into the community. The project was a collaboration between Susie Miller and visual artists Amanda Westbury and Janetka Platun and culminated in an art exhibition in the window of a hairdressers and a film screening in a fish and chip shop.
