The work that we create is led by our artistic and community engagement approach, which is underpinned by 4 main principles. These are our own and have been developed by Susie through the action research she undertook as part of the Cultural Leadership Programme 2009. The principles have been further developed with Helen Ball as part of the Four Colors project.
- Start where People are at – Our approach takes us to were people are physically, we focus on physical locations that can engage the local community within their own environments using that environment to trigger a creative dialogue
- Genuine relationships – We connect with people by communicating honestly. We have a genuine interest in people and with any relationship communication and ‘need’ is 2-way. The work that we create is governed by the relationships we build and the people we find.
- Make a Creative dialogue – Communities are inherently creative, and their creativity inspires our artistic practice. The equality of this exchange sparks an exceptional creative process and product.
- Make the links – We plan and grow natural networks of communication – if the engagement is genuine, there are always links between practice and projects that long outlast any short-term project or engagement process. This is often an instinctual process, recognising and highlighting potential links, whether resource exchanges, introductions or new partnerships; all of which help support community growth.
Through this process, communities can see themselves and where they live from a different perspective, the artistic process can readjust perceptions of an area and a community which has been hidden.
Humourisk create performance and art that inspires natural engagement and original artistic expression that gives cohesion more legroom.
