Applied Arts, Youth and Community Practitioner
Tia is interested in working creatively with communities; she enjoys the engagement process and finding innovative ways to collaborate with communities to tell their story. She specialises in generating opportunities for what are perceived to be ‘hard to reach’ young people, to engage creatively with projects that they may not previously have taken part in.
Tia specialises in creating workshops to engage young people who may be less used to formal learning environments. She has been collaborating with Susie for 10 years, initially meeting through her roles in Black, White, Asian, Other and Boiling Point at the Soho Theatre both directed by Susie. Tia has also performed in The Red Room’s production of Hoxton Story.
Tia has recently been working with young women at risk of sexual exploitation at CRI in Lewisham and collaborated with Susie designing an applied arts emotional wellbeing programme for the Shoreditch Spa, which she delivered within schools and Pupil Referral Units for young people at risk of becoming disengaged.
In 2003 Tia and Susie set up an outreach project and performance group called Unleashed. The group created productions and street performance to campaign on local issues for local audiences. In 2005 they performed ‘Unleashed your Soul’ at the Shoreditch Festival; the production explicated local young people’s aspirations and reflected the vibrantly funny young cast. Tia has lived in Hackney all of her life and wants to continue to find new artistic ways to engage local people and develop active communities.
